Effects of Natucin P on performance of weaned pigs
Materials and methods

Natucin P

Prepared by GuangzhouBestide Bio-Science and Technology Co., Ltd., with antibacterial activity being 120000 AU/g. The antibacterial activity was determined by Determination of Antimicrobial Activity in Natucin, Agar Diffusion Method (EnterpriseStandard ofGuangzhou Bestide Bio-Science and Technology Co., Ltd. ).

Diets

The basal diet was supplied by the Wenchang Gesong Feed Co., Ltd. in Hainan Province. The 4 experimental diets were as follows: (1) basal diet + Natucin P at 0 g/t, (2) basal diet + Natucin P at 50 g/t, (3) basal diet + Natucin P at 100 g/t, (4) basal diet + Natucin P at 200 g/t. The prepared diets were then produced in pellet form.

Animals and management

One hundred and twenty weaned 35-d-old pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire) (6.33±0.11 kgwere randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 replicate pens of 10 pigs each, and fed the 4 experimental diets. During the feeding period, the pigs were provided water and feed ad libitum, and raised on slatted floor in illumination (24 h/d) by overhead fluorescent lighting. The number of pigs with diarrhea per pen and feed intake per pen were recorded daily, and mortality in each pen was recorded if there were pigs dead. At the conclusion of feeding experiment, diarrhea frequency (DF), average daily body weight gain per pig (ABG), average daily feed intake per pig (AFI) and ABG to AFI ratio (G/F) were calculated.

Diarrhea frequency per pen = 100% × total number of pigs with diarrhea/number of pigs ×number of days.

Statistical analysis

The SPSS statistical software package (version 17.0 for Windows; SPSS China) was used for all statistical analyses. Multiple comparisons among means were determined by one-way ANOVA followed byDuncan’s test (when equal variances were assumed) or Tamhane’s T2 test (when equal variances were not assumed). P values, 0·05 were considered significant.

Results

The effects of Natucin P on diarrhea frequency and performance of weaned pigs were shown in Table 1. There was no significant differenceP > 0.05 in initial body weight or weight gain / feed intake ratio, but there were significant differencesP < 0.05 in body weight gain, feed intake ratio and diarrhea frequency among groups respectively. Owning to the fact that the average daily weight gain in Natucin 100 group was the highest, and the diarrhea frequency in Natucin 100 group the lowest, the appropriate supplementation dose was about 100 g/t.

Conclusions

The Natucin P, premix of antimicrobial peptide from commensal bacteria of pigs in semi-wild state, decreased diarrhea frequency and improved voluntary feed intake, thus improved growth of weaned pigs. The appropriate supplementation dose of Natucin P for weaned pigs was about 100 g/t.
