Materials and methods

animals and serum samples

  At the conclusion of the feeding experiment reported in Effects of Natucin P on performance of weaned pigs, serum sample was prepared from one pig per pen in Natucin P 0, 100 and 200 groups.

Determination of the d-lactic acid and lipopolysaccharide levels in the serum

The levels of d-lactic acid and lipopolysaccharide in the serum were determined using a porcine d-lactic acid ELISA kit and LPS-ELISA kit.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a membrane glycolipid that is produced by gram-negative bacteria, is an endotoxin that causes a strong response in normal animal immune systems, as well as significant physiological changes (Wu et al., 2013).

D-Lactic acid is a specific metabolite of lower forms of life and, when found in normally sterile body fluids, indicates bacterial invasion or absorption from a site containing a high density of bacteria (Smith et al., 1986).

 An increase in the concentration of serum D-lactate and LPS reflects the amount of damage to the intestinal mucosa (Smith et al., 1986; Wu et al., 2013). The concentration of serum D-lactate and LPS in Natucin 200 group were significantly lower than those of the negative control (the Natucin 0 group) respectively, indicating that the Natucin P could improved the intestinal mucosal barrier function of the weaned pigs.

Conclusions

Natucin P improved intestinal mucosal barrier function of weaned pigs.
